My glamorous and fantastic friend Mak for Christmas last year gave me Nigella Lawson's "How to Be A Domestic Goddess". Now I definitely do NOT consider myself a Domestic Goddess, nor was I sure I wanted to be one...until I thumbed through the pages. The book is full of amazing recipes, the subtitle sums it up " Baking and The Art Of Comfort Cooking". I pulled it out last week and landed on a page with a recipe for Rhubarb Schnapps. Intrigued, the next time I was at the store I picked up a bottle of Gordon's Vodka (cheap, but not too cheap) and today decided to give it a go! In my garden the Lemon Balm is in it's glory, green and growing what seems like inches everyday. Lemon Balm is a great herb for lifting the spirits and mood. It is also helpful at the onset of a cold. So with this in mind I decided to take inspiration from Nigella's recipe and make up my own. When it's ready you can sip a small bit or use it to make a signature martini! Here it is my Summer Schnapps Recipe, get creative and make your own, then share it with me please!
Summer Strawberry, Lemon Balm, & Ginger Schnapps:
1 Handle of Gordon's (or any cheap) Vodka
2 Pints of Organic Strawberries
Roughly 1 cup Fresh Lemon Balm (or Lavender, Peppermint, etc.)
4 thick slices of fresh Ginger root
1 Cup Sugar
2 Pint size glass Ball jars with tops
Divide the lemon balm, strawberries, & ginger evenly between the two jars
Add sugar, cap and shake
Remove cap and add Vodka to jars, almost filling them completely.
Cap and shake until the sugar begins to dissolve
Store in a cool dark place for 6 months
Strain and serve!
